Procedures - Gastro Oesophageal Reflux Disease Treatment

Commonly the treatment will be with very effective anti acid drugs called proton pump inhibitors. Many patients will have complete control of their symptoms using PPIs however if patients do not have adequate symptom control or do not want to take medication lifelong then surgery can be considered.

The surgery aims to recreate the lower esophageal sphincter mechanism and then wrap the upper part of the stomach called the fundus around the lower part of the esophagus. This is called a fundoplication. This is a safe and effective treatment for reflux and can almost always be achieved with minimal access laparoscopic surgery, usually requiring two nights in hospital. A modified diet after surgery will be suggested and written information is provided. An appointment with an experienced dietitian is also usually recommended.
